On 15 October 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the inclusion of Sukhna Wetland in Chandigarh and Sauj Jheel in Uttar Pradesh as Ramsar sites. With these additions, India’s total number of Ramsar sites reached 103, spread across 28 states and Union Territories.

The inclusion of these wetlands recognizes their ecological importance and highlights the need for their long-term conservation and sustainable management.

Earlier, on 03 August 2026, Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh was announced as India’s 101st Ramsar site. It became the first Ramsar site in the state, bringing international attention to the ecological importance of wetlands in the Eastern Himalayas.

The growing number of Ramsar sites reflects India’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

What Are Ramsar Sites?

Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The convention was adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar to promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands worldwide.

Wetlands include lakes, marshes, rivers, estuaries, mangroves, and other areas where water plays a significant role in the ecosystem. These habitats support a wide variety of plant and animal species and provide essential environmental and economic benefits.

The major benefits of Ramsar sites are:

Protection of biodiversity: They provide habitats for migratory birds, endangered species, fish, and other wildlife.

Maintenance of ecological balance: Wetlands support natural ecosystems and food chains.

Water resource management: They help recharge groundwater and maintain water availability.

Flood control: Wetlands can absorb excess rainwater and reduce the impact of flooding.

Improved water quality: They help trap sediments and filter certain pollutants.

Climate change mitigation: Wetlands, particularly peatlands and mangroves, store significant amounts of carbon.

Livelihood support: They contribute to fishing, agriculture, tourism, and the income of local communities.
