In a major development for Bihar’s education system and aspiring government job seekers, the state cabinet has recently approved two new service cadres under the Education Department-The Assistant Education Development Officer (AEDO) and Education District Officer (EDO). The Bihar government has recently approved the creation of new posts for Block Education Officers (BEO) and Assistant Education Development Officers (AEDO). This decision, approved by the state cabinet, has cleared the way for recruitment to these positions.
A total of 1,503 posts have been sanctioned, which include 935 posts for Assistant Education Development Officers (AEDO) and 568 posts for Block Education Officers (BEO).
Let’s take a comprehensive look at what this means for aspirants, how many posts are expected, the recruitment process, and more.
AEDO & EDO Notification
The Bihar government has introduced two new cadres:
- Assistant Education Development Officer (AEDO)
- Education Development Officer (EDO) – Promotion-based role from AEDO
These new roles are being created to enhance supervision and implementation of education policies at the Panchayat and Block levels.
AEDO & EDO Vacancies: Post Details and Pay Levels
As per the government’s plan, one Assistant Education Development Officer (AEDO) will be appointed for every 10 panchayats, while one Block Education Officer (BEO) will be deployed at each block level. Both positions will be non-gazetted.
In terms of pay structure, the AEDO post is classified under Pay Level-5, while the BEO post falls under Pay Level-6.
Important Note:
- Direct recruitment will be only for the AEDO posts.
- EDO (Education District Officer) and Block Education Officer (BEO) roles will be filled through promotion from AEDO and existing cadres.
Recruiting Body
The recruitment for AEDO posts will be conducted through direct selection, while BEO positions will be filled through promotion from among the Assistant Education Development Officers.
The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) is expected to conduct the recruitment examination for these posts. Although an official notification has not yet been released by the commission, previous communications from the Education Department clearly indicate that BPSC will be responsible for organizing the examination.
Possible Process Ahead
There is a strong possibility that the 935 AEDO posts may be included in the 71st BPSC Civil Services Examination. According to the BPSC notification, any requisitions received by the Commission before the Preliminary Exam (PT) can be added to the examination.
This could be a significant opportunity for aspirants, allowing them to apply for these posts through the ongoing 71st BPSC recruitment process.

After receiving cabinet approval, the proposal will be sent back to the Education Department, which will then forward the requisition to BPSC. The recruitment process will begin and an official notification will be issued only after the requisition is received by the Commission.
