Sitaram Yechury CPI(M) General Secretary Passes Away at 72

Sitaram Yechury a prominent leader and General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], has passed away at the age of 72. Sita Ram Yechury was undergoing treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where he took his last breath on Thursday, 12 September 2024.

Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August, 1952 in Chennai. The political journey of Sitaram Yechury began during his student days at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. His active participation in student movements and his strong defense of civil liberties during the Emergency established him as a committed leftist thinker. His dedication to these principles paved the way for him to become the General Secretary of CPI(M) in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat.

The political influence of Sitaram Yechury extended beyond his party’s boundaries. He played a significant role in the formation of the opposition coalition that was preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His contributions to this coalition were widely acknowledged, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling him the “protector of the idea of India.” Gandhi also credited Yechury for his crucial role in the emergence of the INDIA bloc.

Sitaram Yechury served as a Rajya Sabha MP for 12 years, from 2005 to 2017. His leadership was marked by his efforts to bridge various political differences, earning him respect from leaders with diverse ideologies.
