
On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.Vizhinjam International Seaport, Built at a cost of ₹8,800 crore, this is India’s first deepwater transshipment port. It can handle the world’s biggest cargo ships and will help reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports. Interestingly, the inauguration happened on the birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya, adding cultural significance to the event.

The seaport was officially opened and dedicated to the nation by PM Modi. It is part of the government’s larger vision under projects like Sagarmala, PM-Gati Shakti, and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision to make India a global leader in trade and logistics.
