Kerala and IIT Bombay have started a special project to test a new idea called Vehicle-to-Grid technology (V2G). This idea can help us save energy and make our electricity system stronger and smarter.
What is V2G?
V2G means that electric vehicles (EVs), like electric cars and buses, can give electricity back to the power grid when they are not being used. The grid is the system that brings electricity to our homes and schools.
Two Ways V2G Works:
Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V): This is when an electric vehicle gets charged using electricity from the grid.
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): This is when the vehicle sends electricity back to the grid.
Why is V2G Useful?
Sometimes we get too much or too little electricity from solar panels or wind turbines. With V2G, the batteries in EVs can help by storing extra electricity and giving it back when needed. This helps keep the lights on and the fans running even when there’s less power.
V2G technology enables EV batteries to serve as decentralized storage units, supplying energy to the grid when needed. This not only helps in balancing the grid but also ensures emergency power availability. Moreover, EV owners can potentially earn compensation for supplying power during high-demand periods. Also, in emergencies, these vehicles can give electricity to homes or hospitals.
What’s Happening Around the World?
Countries like the USA, UK, and the Netherlands are already using V2G. They are paying EV owners who send electricity to the grid during busy hours.
What About India?
India is just starting to try V2G. Right now, the main focus is on building more charging stations for EVs. But now, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has made a special team to study V2G and how to use it in India.
Conclusion
This project by Kerala and IIT Bombay is a big step toward using clean and smart energy. If it works well, India can use electric vehicles not just for travel, but also to help power homes and cities in the future.
