
The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) has officially released the revised syllabus and exam pattern for the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) 2025 exam. In accordance with Notification No. 361-PAR(WBCS)/1D-179/21 (dated 15.03.2023) and No. 1060-PAR(WBCS)/1D-179/21 (dated 24.07.2024), the new pattern is applicable from WBCS (Exe.) 2025 onwards.
This revamp aligns WBCS more closely with the UPSC pattern, introducing analytical and Bengal-specific content to better prepare aspirants for real-world administration.
Important Changes in WBCS 2025 Exam
- Preliminary exam now has two papers (instead of one).
- Introduction of “Tradition and Culture of Bengal” as a compulsory subject in Mains.
- More descriptive and merit-based papers.
- New qualifying criteria for language papers.
1. Preliminary Examination: Dual-Paper Format
The Preliminary stage is now split into two objective-type papers:

Note:
The question papers for the Main Examination will be of conventional (descriptive) type.
- The standard of compulsory papers will match the level of learning expected from a graduate of any recognized Indian university.
- The two papers of any one optional subject will be of conventional type, with a standard approximately equivalent to an Honours Degree Examination, except for: Law, Medical Science, and Engineering subjects, which will match the standards of LLB, MBBS, BE, or equivalent degrees recognized by Indian universities/institutions.
- Answers in all papers (compulsory and optional), except Paper I (Language Paper) and specific language papers, may be written either in English or Bengali (unless otherwise directed in the question paper).
- Candidates must write all answers in a paper using only one language consistently; mixing languages in the same paper is not allowed.
- Specific script usage for language papers:
- Sanskrit: Devanagari or Bengali script
- Hindi or Nepali: Devanagari script
- Urdu: Bengali, Arabic, or Persian script
- Santali: Olchiki script (both questions and answers)
